Duke Kahanamoku on the beach with Butch van Artsdalen, Paul Strauch and Fred Hemmings. What looks to be maybe Sunset Beach for the Duke Invitational. According to Fred Hemmings: “We went to Secos where the picture was taken—then we went to Malibu to surf. We were in Los Angeles because Don Ho was performing at the Cocoanut Grove.” The Cocoanut Grove was the (incorrectly spelled) ballroom at the Ambassador Hotel in downtown Los Angeles—infamous as the place where Robert F Kennedy was shot by Sirhan Sirhan. In happier times, Don Ho first played the Cocoanut Grove in 1966 and his Hawaiian friends were on the mainland to show support.
